The 15 yard container in Bloomington
The 15 yard is the step up from the 10 when the job is one big room rather than one small one. Kitchen and bathroom remodels are the classic fit — cabinets, countertops, vanities, tile and the drywall behind them — and so is a carpet, pad, laminate or tile change-out, a garage, attic or basement cleanout, a small deck or fence coming down, or a yard full of branches and shrubs. It holds about four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard 33-gallon bags.
At about 16 feet long it is taller than a 10 and more compact than a 20, and it fits many Bloomington driveways without taking up much more space. The 4.5-foot sides keep loading easy. If you are between a 10 and a 20 and the debris is light and bulky, this is usually where you land.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility lines
Kitchens, floors, decks and yards
A kitchen makes more debris than people expect: by the time the cabinets, the countertops and the drywall are out, a 10 is tight and a 15 is right. Flooring jobs are the same — carpet, pad, laminate and tile — and tile is dense, so watch the weight. Light and medium roofing jobs fit too: tell us the roofing squares and we will help estimate the weight before you book. Break long deck and fence boards down so they load flat.
Backyard jobs fit as well — branches, shrubs, leaves and storm debris. Keep the green waste apart from household trash: Illinois law bars mixing landscape waste with other waste headed for a landfill, and landfills may not accept it for final disposal (415 ILCS 5/22.22), so a clean green load has somewhere to go and a mixed one does not. If more than half the load is dense material such as tile, plaster or concrete, a 10 yard may save you money.
Weight on a 15 yard
About two to three tons — 4,000 to 6,000 pounds — is included, depending on the debris type. Flooring, tile, plaster, roofing and wet yard waste get heavy quickly, so plan by weight, not only volume: we can estimate it from roofing squares, flooring square footage or the cleanup volume before delivery. Load evenly front-to-back and side-to-side, keep everything below the top rail, and cabinets, drywall and carpet will never get near the line. If the load does go over, an overage fee may apply based on disposal weight.
Suitability
Is the 15 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 15 yard for
- Kitchen or bath remodel including cabinets and countertops
- Garage, attic, basement and multi-room cleanouts
- Flooring and carpet removal
- Light and medium roofing jobs
- Yard and storm debris, small deck and fence removal
Pick a different size for
- Whole-house renovation — go to the 20 or 30
- Loads that are mostly tile, plaster, concrete or dirt (weight — a 10 may be better)
- Yard waste mixed into household trash
- Liquids, paint, solvents, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries, asbestos or medical waste
Placing a 15 yard container on a Bloomington-Normal property
It needs a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility lines. In Bloomington we found no City permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: a dumpster in the City right-of-way or street needs the Engineering Division's Dumpster Permit, submitted at least 72 hours before delivery (allow at least 3 business days), for up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, Type I or Type II lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover whenever it is not in use. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and sit on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, where IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own street rules — Hudson and Le Roy want the Mayor's written permission, Lexington the Street Superintendent's authorization, and Lincoln a Street Department permit and a bond for any street dumpster over two cubic yards. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the wheels add protection, and we can discuss protective boards when you book. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How big is a 15 yard dumpster?
About 16 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It holds around four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard trash bags.
Will it fit in my driveway?
Most likely — at about 16 feet it fits many Bloomington driveways, and the driveway is where it should go. The truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach, a flat, solid surface and clear space overhead. We found no Bloomington rule on how long a roll-off may sit on your own driveway. The street is the fallback, not the plan: a container in the street or right-of-way needs a City Engineering Dumpster Permit, applied for at least 3 business days before delivery. The permit runs up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, the container has to sit in a legal parking space in front of the property using it, with lighted barricades at the front and rear, and it has to be covered when you are not loading it. In Normal, Town code keeps roll-offs out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and puts them on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). If you have an HOA, check its rules too.
Can I keep it longer than the standard period?
Yes. Standard rentals are commonly 3 to 7 days, and extensions are possible for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability — just call.
What is the weight limit?
Many 15 yard rentals include about two to three tons, depending on the debris type. Tile, shingles, concrete, dirt and plaster can reach that quickly, so tell us what it is and we will help estimate it.
Can I mix different materials?
Usually yes, as long as nothing on the not-accepted list goes in. Heavy materials mixed with household junk may need special handling or pricing, and yard waste should stay in its own load. If a lot of the load is heavy, tell us and we may recommend a smaller box for that part.
