The 40 yard container in Bloomington
The 40 yard is the largest size we offer, built for high-volume, bulky debris. Commercial renovations, new builds and demolition projects, full-home remodels, warehouse and facility cleanouts, commercial roofing and large event or community cleanups — that is where it lives. It holds about twelve pickup truck loads, or roughly 230 to 250 standard 33-gallon bags, and the tallest sidewalls cut down the number of hauls on a big job.
It is bulky and mixed debris that justifies the 40: drywall, framing, siding, cabinets, shelving, pallets, packaging, retail fixtures. Concrete, brick and soil can pass the weight allowance long before the box looks full, so for heavy rubble a 10 yard alongside it, or a split-load plan, is usually more practical and cost-effective. The footprint is the same 22 by 7.5 feet as a 20 or 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement or gravel, not grass), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck — more if it has to turn — and clear space overhead, free of branches and wires
Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs
Contractors on new builds and commercial renovations, demolition crews, businesses clearing a warehouse or an office, organizers of a large event cleanup — those are the regular 40 yard customers. In Illinois, most of what they load is general construction or demolition debris: bricks, concrete and masonry, wood (including painted or treated wood), drywall, plaster, plumbing fixtures, non-asbestos insulation, roofing, asphalt, glass and the cardboard, piping and metal that come with them (415 ILCS 5/3.160). Clean broken concrete, brick, rock and asphalt with no rebar sticking out is clean construction or demolition debris, which can be recycled rather than landfilled — another reason to keep heavy rubble in its own box.
Demolition comes with paperwork. A regulated asbestos demolition or renovation needs an Illinois EPA notification filed 10 working days ahead (homes and apartment buildings with four or fewer units are exempt unless they have a commercial or public use), and asbestos never goes in a roll-off. In Normal, demolition refuse has to be off the site within seven days (§ 21.1-6), and Town code bars any private hauler from collecting refuse that state or federal law keeps out of landfills. On the road, every load is tarped: Illinois requires trucks carrying garbage or refuse to run with a secure tailgate and a cover (625 ILCS 5/15-109.1).
Access and placement for a 40 yard
The truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach — more if it has to turn — a flat, solid surface such as pavement, gravel or a job-site pad, and clear space overhead. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it. A 40 in a public way is a different question. In Bloomington, a container in the street or right-of-way needs a City Engineering Dumpster Permit, applied for at least 3 business days ahead, for up to 30 days, in a legal parking space, with lighted barricades front and rear and a cover when not in use; obstructing a sidewalk, parkway, alley or parking lane also falls under the City's street closure rule (§ 38-303). In Normal, the Town's Dumpster/Storage Container Permit may require a lighted barricade, allows work only in daylight hours, and asks the applicant to restore the right-of-way and hold the Town harmless. On state routes such as Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 we found no IDOT permit type for a container. Each town page says what that town asks for.
Suitability
Is the 40 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 40 yard for
- Commercial renovations and new builds
- Demolition projects with mixed debris
- Full-home remodels
- Warehouse, facility and office cleanouts
- Large event and community cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Heavy-only loads — concrete, soil and brick go in a 10 or a split load
- Small jobs (you would pay for unused space)
- Sites without truck access and overhead clearance
- Asbestos, hazardous waste, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or appliances still holding refrigerant
Placing a 40 yard container on a Bloomington-Normal property
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement or gravel, not grass), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck — more if it has to turn — and clear space overhead, free of branches and wires. In Bloomington we found no City permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: a dumpster in the City right-of-way or street needs the Engineering Division's Dumpster Permit, submitted at least 72 hours before delivery (allow at least 3 business days), for up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, Type I or Type II lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover whenever it is not in use. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and sit on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, where IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own street rules — Hudson and Le Roy want the Mayor's written permission, Lexington the Street Superintendent's authorization, and Lincoln a Street Department permit and a bond for any street dumpster over two cubic yards. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the wheels add protection, and we can discuss protective boards when you book. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?
Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 — about 22 by 7.5 feet — so it can, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 30, or a 20 with swaps, is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.
How do you load a 40 yard?
Usually by a crew. The sides are eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Load evenly across the container and keep debris below the top rail for safe transport.
Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?
Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. Most rentals include about five to six tons, and concrete or soil reach that at a fraction of the volume. For heavy material, ask about a split load or a smaller dumpster alongside — it is usually more practical and cost-effective.
Do you offer swaps on long jobs?
Yes. When the box is full we haul it away and can rotate in an empty one, and contractors can ask about scheduled rotations and repeat service. Tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.
