The 30 yard container in Bloomington
The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky debris but the site has no more room: a multi-room or full-house renovation, an estate or move-out cleanout, a rental property turnover, a retail or office remodel with shelving, displays and partitions, light demolition, or a community or HOA cleanup. It fits many two-car driveways and job sites, and it holds about nine pickup truck loads, or roughly 170 to 190 standard 33-gallon bags.
The sides are six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and power lines
Big renovations, cleanouts and commercial remodels
Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: the cabinets, the doors, the drywall, framing and flooring. Estate and move-out cleanouts land here too — furniture, mattresses and mixed junk — and so do retail and office remodels and light tear-outs with doors, windows and fixtures. Sort a few things first: TVs, computers, monitors and printers may not be mixed with waste headed for an Illinois landfill (415 ILCS 151/1-83), and fridges, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters and ranges can only go for landfilling once their refrigerant, mercury switches and other regulated components are removed (415 ILCS 5/22.28). Tell us what is in the house and we will talk through where those go.
Knocking a building down takes paperwork before it takes a dumpster. For a regulated asbestos demolition or renovation, the owner or operator files an Illinois EPA notification 10 working days before work starts; privately owned homes and apartment buildings with four or fewer units are exempt unless they have had, or will have, a commercial or public use. Asbestos is not construction debris under Illinois law, so it never goes in a roll-off. In Normal, all refuse from demolishing a building has to be off the site within seven days of the demolition (§ 21.1-6). We will ask what the building is before we quote.
Weight, swaps and long jobs
About four to five tons — 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — is included, depending on the debris type and rental terms. The 30 loads efficiently with bulky mixed debris, but tile, plaster, shingles, wet yard waste and concrete can reach the tonnage limit before the container is full, so separate especially heavy debris and ask about the most cost-effective option. Stay below the top rail so the load can be tarped safely. Jobs that run for weeks usually go on a rotation: once the box is full we haul it away and can rotate in an empty one, and contractors can ask about recurring jobs and scheduled service.
Suitability
Is the 30 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 30 yard for
- Multi-room and full-house renovations
- Estate, move-out and rental property cleanouts
- Retail and office remodels — shelving, displays, partitions
- Light demolition — doors, windows, fixtures
- Community and HOA cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, brick, dirt, tile or plaster — a 10 or 15 is smarter and cheaper
- Heavy-only loads beyond safe haul limits
- TVs, computers and other electronics Illinois keeps out of landfills
- Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuel, tires, batteries or medical waste
Placing a 30 yard container on a Bloomington-Normal property
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and power lines. In Bloomington we found no City permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: a dumpster in the City right-of-way or street needs the Engineering Division's Dumpster Permit, submitted at least 72 hours before delivery (allow at least 3 business days), for up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, Type I or Type II lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover whenever it is not in use. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and sit on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, where IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own street rules — Hudson and Le Roy want the Mayor's written permission, Lexington the Street Superintendent's authorization, and Lincoln a Street Department permit and a bond for any street dumpster over two cubic yards. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the wheels add protection, and we can discuss protective boards when you book. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Is a 30 yard too big for a house?
For a normal cleanout, often yes — a whole-home cleanout is usually a 20. For a remodel that strips several rooms, or a whole estate, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.
Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?
Yes. Once the container is full we haul it away and can rotate in an empty one, and contractors with ongoing work can set up scheduled service at the start.
How much weight is included in a 30 yard?
Usually about four to five tons, depending on the debris type and rental terms. A 30 full of tile, dirt or concrete can go past that well before it reaches the top rail, so we estimate heavy loads with you during the quote.
Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?
On your own driveway or lot in Bloomington we found no City permit rule for a roll-off. The street is different: a container in the street or right-of-way needs a City Engineering Dumpster Permit, applied for at least 3 business days ahead, for up to 30 days, in a legal parking space with lighted barricades and a cover when not in use. In Normal, roll-offs stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission (§ 21.1-4), and a street placement goes through the Town's Dumpster/Storage Container Permit with the Engineering Department (309-454-9578). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, and IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on private property. Each town page says what that town asks for.
