The 20 yard container in Bloomington

When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of the most popular sizes we run, and for many residential and light commercial projects around Bloomington-Normal it is the do-it-all container. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a multi-room renovation, a roof, a large landscaping job or light demolition without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup truck loads, or roughly 110 to 130 standard 33-gallon bags.

It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits many standard driveways and accessible job sites, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility wires

Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts

Furniture, bags and mixed junk from a whole house; drywall, lumber, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches, shrubs and green waste from a big landscaping job; framing, doors and windows from light demolition — these are 20 yard jobs. Tell us the roofing squares and we help estimate the weight before delivery.

Illinois sorts the remodel part of that load by what it is. Under state law, general construction or demolition debris covers bricks, concrete and masonry, wood, drywall, plaster, plumbing fixtures, non-asbestos insulation, roofing shingles, asphalt, glass and the cardboard, piping and metal that come with them (415 ILCS 5/3.160), and the state's construction and demolition recovery facilities have to show that at least 40 percent of what they take in is recyclable (415 ILCS 5/22.38). Avoid mixing large amounts of concrete or dirt with household junk — a 10 yard or a split load is safer and usually better value.

What the 20 yard includes

Flat-rate pricing whenever possible that covers delivery, pickup, disposal up to the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — and the standard rental period, with no hidden surprise charges. The price factors are the delivery location, the debris type and weight, the rental length and any swap-outs. Dense materials can reach the weight limit before the dumpster looks full, so plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly front-to-back and side-to-side, keep debris below the top rail, and tell us when you book if you think you will go over.

Suitability

Is the 20 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 20 yard for

  • Whole-home cleanouts
  • Multi-room renovations — drywall, lumber, cabinets, flooring
  • Roofing projects — shingles and underlayment
  • Large landscaping jobs — branches, shrubs, green waste
  • Light demolition — framing, doors, windows

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, soil, brick, tile or plaster (use a 10, or split the load)
  • Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
  • Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
  • Asbestos, paint, solvents, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or appliances still holding refrigerant

Placing a 20 yard container on a Bloomington-Normal property

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility wires. In Bloomington we found no City permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: a dumpster in the City right-of-way or street needs the Engineering Division's Dumpster Permit, submitted at least 72 hours before delivery (allow at least 3 business days), for up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, Type I or Type II lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover whenever it is not in use. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and sit on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, where IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own street rules — Hudson and Le Roy want the Mayor's written permission, Lexington the Street Superintendent's authorization, and Lincoln a Street Department permit and a bond for any street dumpster over two cubic yards. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the wheels add protection, and we can discuss protective boards when you book. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?

About six, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.

Can a 20 yard fit in a Bloomington driveway?

In many — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs about 60 feet of clear approach to set it down. Put it on the driveway or a paved pad rather than the lawn. If there is truly no room on the property, a Bloomington street placement needs a City Engineering Dumpster Permit first, applied for at least 3 business days ahead, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover on it when you are not loading. Driveway first.

What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?

Usually about three to four tons, depending on the debris type and rental terms. Shingles, tile, concrete and dirt are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.

How long is the rental?

Standard rentals are commonly 3 to 7 days, and you can often extend for an additional daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call and we pick it up early.

Can I get a 20 yard the same day?

Often. Same-day or next-day delivery may be available, depending on scheduling, and the 20 yard is one of our most popular same-day sizes. Call early in the day — before midday gives the best chance. The phone is answered around the clock, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
