Junk Removal across Bloomington-Normal and McLean County

Junk removal is the other half of what we do. Instead of dropping a container and coming back in a week, a crew shows up, loads what you point at, and hauls it off. It suits the jobs where the problem is labor rather than volume: a sofa, a mattress, an appliance, an estate or rental property cleanout, an office of desks and shelving, storm debris, leftover renovation junk. You point, we remove.

It matters here because the city options only go so far. Bloomington collects bulk waste every other week with the first bucket free (§ 21-307), and Normal picks up no more than 500 pounds at the curb (§ 21.1-3) — fine for a couch, not for a houseful. The rule of thumb on the phone: if it is a few items or a couple of pickup loads and you want it gone soon, call the crew. If it is a whole house or a job that will take you more than a day to sort, a self-load dumpster on the driveway is usually the better deal. We run both.

At a glance

What you get with junk removal

  • A crew that does the loading, hauling and disposal
  • Upfront pricing based on volume and labor time
  • Furniture, mattresses, appliances (with the Freon removed when required), household junk, renovation debris, office furniture and shelving
  • Same-day or next-day service may be available, depending on scheduling
  • Usable furniture and household goods donated, and metal, cardboard, electronics and yard waste recycled whenever possible
  • A self-load roll-off on the driveway instead if you would rather load it yourself

Cleanouts, turnovers and the one-off pile

Estate and rental property cleanouts are the biggest category: the furniture nobody wants, the appliances, the garage, attic and basement full of boxes. Property management jobs are next — tenant move-outs and turnover cleanups. Then the one-off pile: the sofa, the mattress, leftover renovation debris, fallen branches and damaged materials after a storm.

Two kinds of item need a word before we come. Electronics — TVs, computers, monitors, printers and the like — may not be mixed with waste headed for an Illinois landfill (415 ILCS 151/1-83), so they travel separately to recycling; McLean County residents can also drop them at the Town of Normal's self-service electronics recycling site at 1301 Warriner Street, which takes nothing from businesses. Fridges, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters and ranges are white goods, which Illinois will not let go for landfilling until their refrigerant and other regulated components are removed (415 ILCS 5/22.28) — tell us what the appliance is when you book and we tell you any cost up front.

Junk removal or a dumpster — which is better?

A rough rule: if the job is a few items or a couple of pickup loads and you want it gone quickly, call the crew — full-service junk removal is priced on volume and labor time. If it is a remodel, a yard, a job site or a multi-day cleanout, a roll-off on the driveway is usually better value because you load it at your own pace and it is priced flat by size. Custom jobs — multiple loads, ongoing projects, large item pickups — get custom pricing. We will say which on the phone; we do both.

Junk removal — the local specifics

Most towns' own programs stop short of a real cleanout. Bloomington collects bulk waste every other week, with the first bucket free, extra buckets charged and appliances on request (§ 21-307); its Citizen Convenience Center takes appliances, empty propane tanks, leaves, brush and grass from residents but not from businesses or contractors, and is closed from January 1 to March 31. Normal picks up no more than 500 pounds at the curb and tells residents to contact a private waste collection contractor for larger amounts. Le Roy runs a residents-only dumpster at the Public Works building, 410 N Hemlock, intended for large household items. Towanda runs spring and fall cleanup dumpsters for village residents that are not meant for business cleanups. Gridley limits its two cleanup days to about 4 cubic yards per household and tells residents they may hire a different collection company in between. Clinton's yearly cleanup voucher covers one pickup truck load or six cubic yards. Household hazardous waste is harder still: the Illinois EPA's permanent collection sites are in Naperville, Rockford, Chicago, Gurnee and Wood River, none near McLean County, and its one-day events need pre-registration. Junk removal is for the pile that cannot wait for any of that. Usable furniture and household goods go to donation, and metal, cardboard, electronics and yard waste to recycling, whenever possible.

Answers

Junk Removal — your questions answered

How is junk removal priced?

Full-service junk removal is priced on volume and labor time, and you get an upfront quote, so there are no surprises. Describe the pile, or email a photo, and we will give you a number.

Do I need to be there?

For the first visit, usually — someone needs to point at what goes and what stays. After that, a gate code and a phone number usually do it.

Can you take appliances?

Yes — appliances, with the Freon removed when required. Illinois bars collecting fridges, freezers, air conditioners, water heaters, ranges and similar large appliances for landfilling until their refrigerant and other regulated components are removed, so they go for recycling rather than the trash. Tell us what the appliance is when you book and we tell you any cost up front.

Can you take a mattress?

Yes. Mattresses are not on the Illinois landfill ban list, so a mattress or box spring can go with the rest of the load. Single-item pickups such as a sofa, a mattress or an appliance are a common junk removal job.

How fast can a crew come?

Same-day or next-day service may be available around Bloomington-Normal, depending on scheduling. Call early in the day for the best chance of today.
