Why a cleanout needs its own dumpster

Dragging a cleanout to the curb a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, drains your weekends. Bloomington's bulk pickup comes every other week and charges $30.00 for each bucket after the first. Normal's curbside stops at 500 pounds, and the Town tells property owners to rent a dumpster above that. Towanda's spring and fall cleanup dumpsters are for village residents, not business cleanups; Le Roy's City dumpster is for residents' large household items; and between Gridley's two cleanup days the Village tells residents they may hire a different collection company. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.

Match the size to the house

For a garage or single-room cleanout, a 10 is often enough; a 15 yard handles garage, attic and basement cleanouts and multi-room cleanouts, and suits moves and estate cleanouts. A whole-home cleanout is usually a 20 yard, which fits bulky items and high volume, or a 30 yard for estate, move-out and rental property cleanouts with a lot of furniture. Warehouse and facility cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.

Plan, sort and work room by room

Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four buckets, keep, donate, drop-off and toss, before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off bucket is the Illinois one: TVs and computers, large appliances, tires and car batteries cannot go in the box, and yard waste goes as its own load. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of maybe items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.

  • Garage and storage: old tools, broken equipment, leftover building materials; tires and car batteries go to the drop-off pile.
  • Kitchen: cabinets and cookware you no longer use; fridges, freezers and ranges go elsewhere (below).
  • Bedrooms and closets: furniture, mattresses, clothing and boxes can all go in, or to donation.
  • Attic and basement: stored boxes, holiday decorations, keepsakes to sort; old TVs and computers to the drop-off pile.
  • Yard: branches, shrubs, old fencing, patio furniture; brush and leaves as their own load.

Time it to the job

Standard rentals commonly run 3 to 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? We can often extend and price it as a daily or weekly extension, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we can schedule an early pickup. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we know where to place the dumpster and the area is clear, which helps when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town. If the box has to go in a Bloomington street, the Engineering Dumpster Permit runs up to 30 days unless the Director approves longer. In Normal, a private collector may not leave its dumpster on the property more than six days after service ends (§ 21.1-5).

What cleanout junk can go in

Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses, boxes and general junk, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, small appliances, cardboard kept together, and yard waste as its own load. On the statutes we read, Illinois does not ban mattresses or clothing from landfills. Load smart: break down bulky items, spread the weight evenly rather than piling it at one end, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep the load below the top rail so it can be tarped and safely hauled. If the cleanout turns into a remodel, with cabinets coming off the walls or flooring coming up, tell us, because household junk and construction debris are different loads.

Set these aside, and where they go

A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. TVs, computers, monitors and printers are banned from landfill-bound waste in Illinois (415 ILCS 151/1-83); McLean County residents can take them to the Town of Normal's self-service electronics recycling site at 1301 Warriner Street, which does not take business loads, appliances, light bulbs or alkaline batteries. Fridges, freezers, ranges, water heaters and A/C units may not be collected for landfilling unless their refrigerant and other components are removed (415 ILCS 5/22.28; 40 CFR 82.155); Bloomington residents can ask for City appliance pickup or use the Citizen Convenience Center, and our junk removal service takes appliances with Freon removed when required. Tires, whole or cut, and car batteries are banned from landfills too. Paint, pesticides and gasoline go to an Illinois EPA household hazardous waste collection, with pre-registration required. Empty propane tanks are taken at Bloomington's Citizen Convenience Center for residents. Usable furniture and household goods can be donated, and our junk removal team recycles and donates whenever possible. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Driveways, HOAs and the street

We found no Bloomington rule setting a permit, time limit or surface for a roll-off on your own driveway. A driveway, gravel area or pavement works best, and plywood or boards under the wheels help protect it. If your home is in an HOA, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day and let us know about any tight access. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards without the Town's permission and go on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4), so the driveway is the spot, not the lawn.

The street is a different matter. In Bloomington it takes the Engineering Dumpster Permit, at least 3 business days ahead, with lighted barricades, a legal parking space and a cover when not in use. In Normal it takes the Town's permission and the Dumpster/Storage Container Permit. On state routes such as Veterans Parkway, US-150 and IL-9, IDOT has no permit for a container. A few towns have their own collection rules for homes: Lincoln has an exclusive franchise for single-family household waste until February 28, 2027, so we check the City's rules before booking a household cleanout container there, and in Heyworth (9-5-3C) and Downs (Ch. 4 Art. II Sec. 4(e)) we check the Village's rules before booking. The permit guide has every town we list.

Delivery day, or let us do the lifting

Our dumpsters are driveway-friendly. Give us a flat, solid spot with about 60 feet of approach space for the truck and no branches or wires overhead, move cars out of the way, and mark the placement spot with cones, tape or chalk if you will not be there. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime; in Normal, collections from homes run 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday (§ 21.1-5). If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our crew handles the loading, hauling and disposal and recycles and donates whenever possible. Call (309) 893-1463 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: in many areas around Bloomington and nearby communities we offer same-day or next-day delivery, depending on availability.

Frequently asked questions

What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?

For a whole-home cleanout, a 20 yard is the usual fit, or a 30 for an estate, move-out or rental property cleanout with a lot of furniture. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.

Can I throw away furniture and mattresses?

Yes. Furniture, mattresses and household junk can all go in a roll-off; on the statutes we read, Illinois does not ban mattresses from landfills. Keep TVs, computers, large appliances, tires and car batteries out.

What about appliances and old TVs?

Set them aside. Illinois keeps TVs, computers and other electronics out of landfill-bound waste, and large appliances need their refrigerant and other components removed. McLean County residents can use the Town of Normal electronics site, and our junk removal service takes appliances with Freon removed when required.

How long can I keep a cleanout dumpster?

Standard rentals commonly run 3 to 7 days, and your quote confirms the days. If you need more time, we can often extend and price it as a daily or weekly extension; finish early and we can schedule an early pickup.
