The 10 yard container in Bloomington
The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it suits tight spots — a short driveway, a pad beside the garage, a corner of a job site. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup truck loads, or roughly 50 to 70 standard 33-gallon trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.
Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and dirt reach the limit long before a bigger box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons, depending on the material. That is why heavy material usually goes in the smaller containers — the 10 works best when the debris is dense and heavy rather than bulky. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the weight allowance.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility lines
Small remodels, single-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff
A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage or single-room cleanout, a small kitchen job, the shingles off a smaller house or garage roof, or a patch of concrete, brick, tile or asphalt coming up.
It suits Bloomington because the City's own pickup stops short of that kind of debris. The City's bulk and building-waste collection will not take waste from any work done by a contractor, and it will not take broken concrete, brick, rock, stone or reclaimed asphalt (City Code § 21-307). The City's Citizen Convenience Center no longer takes concrete, rock, shingles or brick, and contractors may not use it at all. In Normal, the Town picks up no more than 500 pounds of rubbish or construction debris at the curb and nothing created by a contractor (§ 21.1-3), and its Bulky Waste page says property owners "must rent a commercial dumpster from a private firm" when they tear out and replace a concrete driveway or sidewalk. A 10 yard on the driveway is what that looks like.
What a 10 yard costs, and where the weight line sits
On average a 10 yard runs about $350–$550, depending on the location, the debris type, the rental length and the disposal weight. That is an average, not a quote: call (309) 893-1463 with the address and the material and you get a flat-rate quote whenever possible, with delivery, pickup, disposal and the rental period explained before the truck leaves the yard. About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it below the top rim and tell us it is coming. If the load goes over the included allowance, an overage fee may apply based on disposal weight, and we explain the terms up front. Every load leaves covered: Illinois law requires a vehicle to be loaded so nothing can drop, shift, leak or escape, and any load and cover to be securely fastened (625 ILCS 5/15-109).
Suitability
Is the 10 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 10 yard for
- Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
- Garage or single-room cleanout
- Roof tear-off on a smaller house or garage
- Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and tile within the weight limit
- Short driveways and tight placement spots
Pick a different size for
- A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
- Bulky furniture from several rooms
- Paint, fuel, oil, hazardous liquids, tires, batteries, asbestos or pressurized tanks
- Fridges, freezers and other appliances still holding refrigerant
Placing a 10 yard container on a Bloomington-Normal property
It needs a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and clear space overhead, free of branches and utility lines. In Bloomington we found no City permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: a dumpster in the City right-of-way or street needs the Engineering Division's Dumpster Permit, submitted at least 72 hours before delivery (allow at least 3 business days), for up to 30 days unless the Director of Engineering approves longer, with the container in a legal parking space in front of the property, Type I or Type II lighted barricades at the front and rear, and a cover whenever it is not in use. In Normal, roll-off boxes stay out of front yards and the street right-of-way without Town permission and sit on a concrete or asphalt pad (§ 21.1-4). Veterans Parkway, I-55, I-74, US-150 and IL-9 are state routes, where IDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own street rules — Hudson and Le Roy want the Mayor's written permission, Lexington the Street Superintendent's authorization, and Lincoln a Street Department permit and a bond for any street dumpster over two cubic yards. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the wheels add protection, and we can discuss protective boards when you book. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?
The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Pick a flat, solid spot such as a driveway or a paved pad, allow about 60 feet of clear approach for the roll-off truck, and check that there are no branches or utility lines overhead. Move cars, bins and equipment out of the way, and if you will not be home, mark the spot with cones or tape. In Bloomington, keep it on your own property if you can: a container in the street or right-of-way needs a City Engineering Dumpster Permit, applied for at least 3 business days ahead.
Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?
Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Concrete, brick, asphalt and rock usually go only in the smaller containers, because heavy materials have strict weight limits for safe transport. Spread it evenly, keep it below the top rim, and tell us roughly how much there is. Clean broken concrete, brick, rock and asphalt count as clean construction or demolition debris under Illinois law (415 ILCS 5/3.160), so a clean load is easier to send for recycling than a mixed one.
How long do I get it for?
Standard rentals are commonly 3 to 7 days, and we offer flexibility based on scheduling. Need more time? Call and we can often extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability. If it fills before the job is done, we can swap it. Finished early? Call and we will schedule an early pickup.
How much does a 10 yard dumpster cost?
On average about $350–$550, depending on the location, the debris type, the rental length and the disposal weight. We quote every job on its own: flat-rate pricing whenever possible, with delivery, pickup, disposal and the included weight allowance explained before delivery and no hidden fees. Call (309) 893-1463 for an exact price for your address. If the job grows, we can swap it for a bigger box.
